If I were to mention the phrase “information breach” you’d be forgiven for thinking that I was talking about the high profile news items concerning computer hackers, theft or loss of laptops and other mobile equipment that contained sensitive data. However, breaches of information security can come in all forms, as illustrated by the recent case here in Bristol, where a Barrister was seen throwing confidential paper case notes into a public litter bin. Other examples of bundles of court case notes being found at rubbish dumps, or accidentally left in a cafe, highlight the need for information security policies and procedures, regardless of whether the information is stored in an electronic or paper form. In these cases, I can’t help but wonder whether there would be so much fuss if an encrypted disk had been mislaid, rather than paper documentation. It's not rocket science, is it?
